Spring is on its way, and it’s time to gather your seeds together for Seedy Saturday on Feb. 29.

The event began at the Keremeos Grist Mill 31 years ago, founded by then head gardener Sharon Remepel, before quickly growing in popularity and taking over the larger Cawston Hall. Seedy Saturday is now a feature of spring in communities across Canada.

The Penticton Seedy Saturday starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m.

In addition to the seed exchange table, there will also be bedding plants and perennials, local agricultural products, and organic and heritage seeds.

There will also be a series of presentations during Seedy Saturday starting at 10:15 a.m. Candace Moon of Stellar Ground will talk about planting and harvesting according to the phases of the moon. At 11:15, Ella Brade of Incredible Edible goes over proper fruit tree pruning, training and espalier, the tradition of tying branches to a frame to control growth.

At 12:15, Chris Mathieson from the Keremeos Grist Mill will give a presentation. Eva Durance has the final speaker slot, where she will provide the basic principles of xeriscaping, which focuses on reducing water usage and increasing sustainability in landscaping.
