Carmi Elementary students got a sweet surprise on Wednesday that hopefully lifted their spirits after the devastating break-in last week that saw over 30 computers stolen.

When the final school bell rang at 2:35 pm. at Carmi Elementary, Sprott Shaw College early childhood education (ECE) students were there ‘dishing out scoops of love’ aka ice cream to all the students who wanted some. There were plenty of smiles and ice cream to go around.

The ice cream idea actually came from Carmi Elementary parent Melody Leinweber who is also a student in the Sprott Shaw ECE program.

Leinweber is the coordinator of the school’s Breakfast Club and is also on the Parent Advisory Committee. She wanted to do something for the students to put a smile on their faces and show them there is more good in this world than bad, she said.

“In yesterday’s class, Melody explained that she overheard the students’ heartbreaking comments and how sad the students were Tuesday morning as she was serving Breakfast Club, so she talked to the principal of Carmi and asked to do something sweet for the students to put the smiles back on their faces,” said Alicia Selock, the ECE instructor at Sprott Shaw College in Penticton.

“As soon as Melody told our ECE class that she would need to leave our class early today (Wednesday), for something special for the Carmi students, our class immediately jumped at the chance to give back to the children. I spoke with the Director of Sprott Shaw College, Zola Goebel, who on behalf of Sprott Shaw, was eager to donate money towards the treats.”

Dozens of students at Carmi enjoyed some ice cream after school.

“With everything going on in the world, my ECE’s think it’s important to be role models and boost morale, show compassion and empathy for people in our community, especially the children; show children that we have their backs.”
