It is a simple mantra that has kept Penticton’s Breezy Johnson going all these years, right up to her 100th birthday.
“Well, everything in moderation, that’s my advice,” said Johnson. “When people ask about my secret, all I can tell them is that my mom and dad gave me good genes. I only wear them on Sunday’s so they’ve lasted a long time.”
Johnson is a resident of the Concorde Retirement Residence and on Oct. 21 she celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and friends. She reflected on her life this past century.
“There are so many things I never would have imagined,” Johnson said. “I don’t think there’s anything that hasn’t changed. Everything is constantly evolving and revolving and nothing stays the same.”
Johnson has spent the last 41 years in Penticton, and has seen it grow over the years, although not too much.
“Penticton is a place that can never grow too big.
With the lakes on both ends and mountains on the other sides, and that’s kind of nice. I love it for that.”
Her cousins made the trip out to Penticton for her, traveling from Winnipeg, Port Alberni, and all the way up from Arizona. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren also came to celebrate Johnson’s 100th birthday with her.
So, how does it feel to be 100?
“To be honest, I don’t know because I have never been this age before,” said Johnson, who giggled through her answer. “So, I really can’t tell you.”
From microwaves to cars, planes and going to the moon, Johnson said many things have amazed her over the years.
“There are things you would never dreamt you would have seen … I witnessed a lot of these things but at my age I have forgotten most of them,” she said with a laugh.
