It’s a picturesque scene that’s been loved by Canadians forever — pond hockey being played on a frigid winter day. It’s one that Penticton’s Lakeside Resort hopes to create each and every day this winter.
Since Dec. 15, the resort has welcomed the public to its outdoor skating rink for some winter fun.
With the view of Okanagan Lake in the background, hockey lovers and winter enthusiasts have made their way to downtown Penticton to check out the five-year-old rink.
According to the resort’s general manager Elizabeth Cucnik, people who have skated on the rink thus far couldn’t be happier.
“They love it, especially because it’s right by the lake,” she said. “They have the beautiful view of Okanagan Lake and the Valley and yet they can still be outside enjoying a free activity with their family in the wintertime.”
The space is open for skating from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day during the winter. Playing hockey and enjoying the Okanagan views is something Cucnik believes is as important as ever.
“It’s encouraging mental health,” she said. “For us, it’s encouraging people to get out for some fresh air. Mental health and emotional wellbeing are obviously very important for our community so we’re happy to support that.”
The outdoor rink is large enough for about 10 people, according to the resort’s general manager.
“What’s nice about it is that because we have a refrigeration unit, it can be operational when it up’s to 7 C, so even on a beautiful, warmer winter day, people can still be outside enjoying the skating rink.”
From hockey enthusiasts to local families looking for a day outside, the resort has seen just about everyone with skates in their hands looking to step on the ice.
“We’ve even had ski teams (staying at the resort) who like to use the ice rink who have brought their skates. It’s a lovely little add-on feature that we can present to people.”
The space is fully licensed and set on the resort’s private beach.
And even if somebody chooses not to skate, there’s still a way for everyone to enjoy the wintertime scene in Penticton, according to Cucnik.
“You can enjoy a hot beverage of your choice and sit there with your family by the heaters and fire pit. It’s quite exclusive and unique.”
To arrange private bookings for the rink in two-hour time slots, the resort asks that you contact the front desk or visit pentictonlakesideresort.com/conveniences/ice-rink/ for more information.
