Players beat the odds in Summerland poker game

Two Summerland poker players beat the odds with a royal flush and a straight flush during a recent game in Summerland.

Emma Guy, a member of a Thursday evening poker club in Summerland, said a game in late January resulted in George Harris earning a royal flush in clubs and Margaret Lynum having a straight flush in clubs in the same game.

The two hands are the rarest in poker. According to information Bicycle playing cards, in five-card poker, the chance of a royal flush — a 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace in the same suite — are one in 649,739, while the odds of a straight flush — five consecutive cards in a suit but not a royal flush — are one in 72,192.
