Who is ready for some good news?
The popular Summerland Health Care Auxiliary Thrift Store is reopening Feb. 16. Initially, the thrift store will only be open three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. Donations will start being accepted Saturday, Feb. 6.
To keep customers and volunteers safe, the Summerland thrift store closed its doors Dec. 6, 2020 with plans to reopen Jan. 2. With the second COVID wave increasing cases around Interior Health, the volunteers decided to keep the store closed until February.
“We’re starting to get concerned about the outbreaks in the community,” said Wess Campbell, president of the health care auxiliary at the time of closing in December. “We can’t put volunteers at risk.”
On a typical day, the store sees 150 customers. The hours of operation are 1 to 4 p.m. People come from all over the Okanagan to shop at this thrift store for its wide selection of everything, and for sale days.
During 2020, it wasn’t uncommon to see people wait in line outside the Victoria Road North store for more than 30 minutes.
Masks are still required when they reopen and there will be a limit of people allowed inside.
“Thank you for your patience,” said a post on the thrift store’s Facebook page. “New volunteers are always welcome and needed. Especially at this time, as we have lost quite a few [volunteers].”
