Property crime reports dropped by 15 per cent in 2020, according to the RCMP’s quarterly report to Penticton city council.
The total number of calls for the year also went down, from 17,788 in 2019 to 16,262 for a nine per cent decrease.
The report also includes a list of the top 10 calls for service for the Penticton detachment.
Calls about an unwanted person totalled 303, followed by 247 for a disturbance, 230 to assist another agency such as Penticton Fire Department or B.C. Ambulance, 211 for thefts, and 160 for a suspicious person.
RCMP received 149 calls for well-being checks, 133 for suspicious circumstances, 129 abandoned 911 calls, 129 traffic incident reports, and 104 were to assist the public.

Only two categories out of 16 did not decrease compared to 2019. Assaults and fraud were the only increases, going from 439 assault cases to 452, and from 336 to 374 fraud cases.
Property crime saw substantial drops across multiple categories, with only mischief to property not decreasing by double digits.
The largest decrease was in auto theft, which dropped by 38 per cent, from 316 in 2019 to 195 in 2020. Residential break-ins were close behind with a 37 per cent drop, going from 148 to 93 reported cases.
Total property crime dropped by 15 per cent, from 5,018 total cases in 2019, down to 4,260 in 2020. Violent crime also went down by three per cent – 939 to 909 for 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Sex offences dropped from 90 cases to 80 last year, while uttering threats went from 237 to 222, and domestic violence dipped slightly from 172 to 162.
