A province-wide pledge to keep domestic cats and birds safe is coming to Penticton.
The next edition of the Brown Bag Lecture Series at the Penticton Museum and Archives will feature a discussion about animal welfare in B.C. and explore the public’s role in the matter.
Cats and birds project coordinator at the Stewardship Centre for British Columbia (SCBC), Anna Skurikhina, will share simple tips and solutions for keeping animals safe on March 22 starting at 12 p.m.
“When cats are allowed to roam freely, they may be harmed by many things such as wild animals, cars, toxins or disease,” Skurikhina wrote in the museum’s latest announcement.
Roaming cats are among the top human-caused sources of bird mortality, killing 350 million in Canada each year, she added.
“In addition, cats can transmit parasites and diseases to humans.”
Skurikhina will present on-the-ground research conducted by the SCBC on cats and birds in Vancouver, as well as in the Okanagan.
Free-roaming domestic cats are described as a complex animal-welfare issue, said the museum’s upcoming speaker.
The March 22 lecture, The Role of the Public in Cat and Wildlife Welfare, will be conducted both in-person and virtually.
Skurikhina’s talk is from noon to 1 p.m.
The Brown Bag Lecture Series is a community event at the museum and welcomes unique presenters each Tuesday that introduce a number of different topics.
In-person admission to the lecture is by donation.
