The South Okanagan-Similkameen (SOS) Volunteer Centre has added to its leadership group in the form of a new executive director and general manager.

Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) director for Kaleden, Subrina Monteith, has been hired as the executive director at the SOS Volunteer Centre, while Michael Magnusson has been named the organization’s new general manager.

Being one of the new leaders at the volunteer centre feels just right to Monteith.

“I have always been a community volunteer and strong advocate for volunteerism,” Monteith said.

The centre’s new executive director has been active in bringing safety improvements to the dangerous corridor at Highway 97 and 3A in Kaleden while serving as a board member and director with the RDOS.

Monteith has pushed for changes to the corridor for a long time. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure confirmed with the Western News on Jan. 24 that improvements would indeed be coming, much to the delight of the centre’s new executive director.

“With my Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen director position, I believe I can bring a regional approach to the Volunteer Centre as I understand rural communities’ needs,” she added.

Meanwhile, Magnusson has been named the organization’s general manager after working on developing “strong financial controls” in the community, the SOS Volunteer Centre said.

Monteith’s past volunteer experience includes working as the vice-chair of Penticton Peach Fest and a sponsorship director of the city’s Peach Festival.

And according to the centre, the newest executive director’s vision is simple — to be a voice for volunteerism.

“I believe in giving back to a community and investing my time into making a community vibrant,” she said in the aftermath of being named the centre’s executive director. “I see many growth opportunities for the organization.”
