Summerland Alliance Gardens to hold squash harvest

Organizers see increased interest in gardening during COVID-19 pandemic

Organizers of a community garden project in Summerland are preparing to harvest their squash later this month.

The Summerland Alliance Gardens, at the Alliance Church property on Victoria Road North, included an area dedicated to growing squash this year.

Christina Ripley, one of the organizers of the garden project, said the squash will be ready for harvest near the end of September.

Some of the squash will be delivered to the Summerland Food Bank and Resource Centre and some will be available to those who want it.

The gardens had 40 serviced plots available this year, and most were gardened by members of the community.

“This year, with COVID-19, there was much more of an interest in gardening,” Ripley said.

This is the second year the gardens have been in operation.

For next year, organizers are hoping to have more garden plots available.

The squash harvest will be held Sept. 26 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Those who wish to attend are asked to contact Christina Ripley at 250-279-0071 or Kate Hobbs at 778-931-0292, or to email summerlandcommunitygardens@gmail.com.
