Giant’s Head Elementary School in Summerland is raising funds to complete its Outdoor Learning Landscape project.
The project, to be constructed at the rear of the school property near Prairie Creek, has been designed as an experimental learning space and an outdoor classroom.
“The Outdoor Learning Landscape has been in the minds of a parental committee and staff for several years now,” said Craig Dunbar, principal of the school.
The facility “provides students an opportunity for informal discovery and learning outdoors,” Dunbar said.

A portion of the space will have indigenous plants. In addition, a sheltered area with seating will be constructed.
During school hours, this area will be for students and teachers, but after school, on weekends and during the summer, it will be open for the public.
Dunbar said the area is intended primarily as a learning facility.
“For us, it’s not a traditional playground area,” he said.
He hopes to have the project completed by the end of May.
The total cost of the project is $45,000. At present, $25,000 has been raised.
Donations are still being accepted. Donations of $50 or more are eligible for a tax receipt. Sponsors donating $500 or more will be recognized on a permanent plaque at the site.
