It will be a celebration of theatre, song, dance and feminism as Summerland Secondary School stages Legally Blonde later this month.
“Its female empowerment all wrapped up in a lot of pink,” said Heather Ayris, drama teacher at the high school. “It’s a really great story.”
The story follows the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrols in Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner.
She later defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial.
“She has a lot more potential than she thought she did,” Ayris said.
She added that the play’s message of female empowerment resonates throughout the story.
“There are lots of references to Gloria Steinam and feminism,” she says.
The musical, by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, is based on the novel by Heather Hatch. It was first staged in 2007.
Ayris said the musical involves 80 students from the high school, in roles on stage and back stage.
Auditions were held in June and the lead characters worked on their lines and music over the summer.
“It’s a great group of kids,” Ayris said. “Summerland is amazing. It’s a very special place for theatre at this school.”
The play runs Feb. 20 to 23 and Feb. 27 to March 2 at Centre Stage Theatre. Tickets are on sale at the high school office and The Beanery.
