Sept. 16 will mark the 38th annual Terry Fox Run.

The run’s namesake, Terry Fox, would have been 60 this year. After losing his leg to cancer at just 18 years old, Fox set out on his Marathon of Hope across Canada on April 12, 1980, when he was 22. Fox would go on to run 3,339 miles and raise $23.4 million before losing his battle with cancer on June 28, 1981, just one month before his 23rd birthday.

As for why the Terry Fox Run is still important today, Kevin Harvey, one of the run organizers, says “there isn’t a person today not touched by cancer.”

“We’re doing this for Terry Fox himself, to keep his legacy and memory alive,” said Harvey. “We don’t want to see this run disappear from Penticton.”

Penticton’s run will start at the SS Sicamous with registration opening at 9 a.m. and the run kicking off at 10 a.m. Participants will have the choice between the one kilometre, two km and five km runs. A volunteer station will be providing runners water at the 2.5 km marker.

Penticton run organizers will have a booth for the upcoming Terry Fox Run at the entrance to the farmers’ market Sept. 15 for participants to collect pledge forms or volunteer to help the day of the event.

Those looking to volunteer with the event but are unable to attend the farmers’ market can contact Kevin Harvey at 250-486-3215 or kandpharvey@gmail.com. Registration can also be done online.
