Two Penticton kids raise over $400 for charity

Harper’s mom says she was inspired to raise money after seeing one of the wildfires in the area

A six- and eight-year-old raised $415 for Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT) selling lemonade and baked goods on Saturday (Sept. 4).

Dana Wilmot-Chapman said her daughter, Harper (6), and neighbourhood friend Ellie (8) raised the money in just a couple of hours outside their house on Bassett Street.

Wilmot-Chapman says Harper has been wanting to run a lemonade stand since last year, but due to COVID-19 they felt it was smarter to wait.

After seeing one of the active wildfires in the South Okanagan, Harper asked if she would be able to run the stand now and donate the money raised to wildfire relief.

Wilmot-Chapman chose ALERT after consulting a local Facebook page asking for charity suggestions.

Harper sold the lemonade for 25 cents a glass alongside cookies and brownies for 50 cents that she made with her Nana on Friday.

ALERT is an organization that rescues, evacuates, shelters and cares for animals during emergency events.

During one of the worst wildfire years in recent history, ALERT was home to over 100 evacuated animals for part of this summer.
