More than 120 students from private school take part in 40th anniversary of run

More than 120 Unisus students from Kindergarten to Grade 11 took part in the 40th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run.

The annual run was adapted to follow COVID-19 protocols to ensure safe participation.

Air quality concerns presented challenges during the week due to the fires south of the border, however, it subsided enough by last Thursday to allow race day to occur.

In the spirit of Terry Fox, the Unisus School Run organizers believed supporting the Canadian hero and his message of hope was too important to postpone.

“Our staff created the Tree of Hope,” said head of school Roger Marino.

“Each member of our community posted on the tree for who or why they were running.”

Each student ran or walked a one-kilometre loop, following all the COVID-19 physical distance protocols on the school’s property. With the smaller class sizes and large outdoor campus, it provided a safe setting for the event.

Students ran a combined total of 174 kilometres which will be added to the community’s Summerlanders Try For Terry Campaign, which is trying to collectively run 2,626 kilometres – the distance Terry Fox had remaining when he suspended his Marathon of Hope in September 1981.

The school has set up a Terry Fox School Run fundraising page which community members can donate to the larger cause.
