Award-winning production returns to Vernon stage

Powerhouse Theatre will present pair of encore performances of the award-winning production Radium Girls as a fundraiser to help cast and crew attend Theatre BC's Mainstage Festival July 1-7 in Fort St. John

Radium Girls is returning to the stage for a pair of special summer encores.

Vernon's Powerhouse Theatre's award-winning production will entertain crowds with special fundraising shows Friday and Saturday, July 4 and 5. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. both nights.

The shows are vital to help send Radium Girls' cast and crew to Theatre BC's Mainstage Festival in Fort St. John next month, after the play won the Allum Cup for Best Production at the Okanagan OZone Festival in Salmon Arm.

The Powerhouse play will represent the Okanagan at Mainstage.

If you missed Radium Girls during its run at the Powerhouse in April and May, now’s your chance to experience this powerful, poignant, and timely story brought to life by an award-winning ensemble.

And even if you caught it during its spring run, you’ll discover something new this time around.

“This version is deeper, more dynamic, and more polished,” said Julie Depatie, who plays Dr. Marie Curie and the Shop Girl. “We’ve worked with a professional adjudicator since winning Best Production at the OZone Festival, and that feedback has transformed the show in the best way. There are layers and moments that weren’t there before.

"Even if you saw it in April or May, you’ll be surprised by how far it’s come.”

Besides the Allum Cup, Radium Girls walked away with eight other honours from OZone:

• Best Ensemble;

• Best Director – Adele Kuyek;

• Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Female Role – Ellen Campbell as Grace;

• Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Male Role – Christopher Marioni (multiple roles);

• Best Costume Design – Joan Sasges;

• Best Lighting Design – Jessika LaFramboise;

• Outstanding Cameo Performance – Ben McLean for Cowboy.

The only two actors in Armstrong’s Asparagus Community Theatre’s presentation of Tuesdays With Morrie – Gary Swift and Peter Byrnes – shared the Best Male Actor in a Leading Role award. Director Cara Nunn and stage manager Kiidra Duhault received the Best Backstage Cooperation award on behalf of the troupe.

Tickets for the encore shows are available from ticketseller.ca or by phoning 250-549-SHOW (7469).

Mainstage Festival runs July 6-11. The Powerhouse Theatre is slated to present Radium Girls Wednesday, July 9.
