Here’s what’s happening this weekend in the South Okanagan

Weekend of rock and roll in Oliver, races at the track and Summerland’s Ryga Festival all coming up

It’s a weekend of festivals in the South Okanagan, just one week before the anticipated return of Ironman Canada in the Peach City on Sunday, Aug. 28.

Kim Mitchell rocks Oliver (Aug. 19)

Ontario rocker Kim Mitchell is back in the Okanagan, this time with a performance at Oliver’s District Wine Village.

Joined by guest Mason Burns, Mitchell’s show kicks off at 6 p.m.

Ryga Festival in Summerland continues (Aug. 19 to 21)

A celebration of the arts continues in Summerland this weekend.

Award-winning music, play readings and artistic workshops headline the festivities.

Oliver’s Roots and Fruits Festival (Aug. 19 to 20)

The Oliver Community Park will play host to a “Rock and Roll Picnic,” on Friday night to kick off the town’s annual festival, headlined by Tragically Hip cover band, The Hip Replacements.

The park will host the festivities all weekend long, with the annual expo providing entertainment and activities for people of ages.

A parade between Similkameen Avenue and Veteran’s Ave. at 10:30 a.m. kicks off the day, with a performance from Indigenous-led “Curtis Clear Sky and the Constellationz” and local artist MadHoney set to close out the festivities from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Saturday markets in downtown Penticton (Aug. 20)

There are plenty of opportunities for people to enjoy the Farmers’ Market and the Downtown Penticton Community Market while the summer’s still here.

The 100 and 200 blocks of Main Street, respectively, will be occupied by the vendors starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Racing at the Speedway (Aug. 20)

Avion spring cars, hornets and street stocks return to the Penticton Speedway this Saturday starting at 7 p.m.

The race comes one week before the track welcomes back “Hit-to-Pass Trailer Racing,” on Aug. 27.
