The Other Side of Hope, a humorous reflection on the modern-day experience of a Syrian refugee living in Finland, is the latest installment of Penticton’s Kitchen Stove Film Series.

The film, written, produced and directed by Finnish director Akï Kaurismäki won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival and is currently being shown at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The 100-minute movie follows the lives of two men who form an unlikely friendship when one is found sleeping behind the other’s restaurant.

Wikström (Sakari Kuosmanen), a travelling salesman looking for a change, decides to sell his shirt business, leave his wife, and buy a failing restaurant.

Shortly after his career change, he finds Khaled (Sherwan Haji) a young Syrian refugee sleeping outside the restaurant. Khaled found his way to Helsinki by stowing away in a ship. When his immigration application is denied he decides to stay in the country as an illegal. When Wikström realizes the difficulties facing the man he offers him a job as a dishwasher and cleaner and a friendship is forged between the two.

The critically acclaimed film will play at Landmark 7 Cinema Jan. 18. Pre-purchased single tickets are $13. A limited amount of tickets are available at the door for $15. Films are screened at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Kitchen Stove Film Series is an initiative of the Penticton Art Gallery. Broadening the definition of the visual arts to include the medium of film, the series aims to inspire, challenge, educate and entertain while showcasing excellence in the cinematic arts.
