The Greyback Hammerheads defended their 2018 title to win the coveted Peach Fest Peach Bin Race in a championship final against the SkyHawks parachute team on Wednesday.

Hundreds lined the 100 block of Main Street to take in the race that saw six peach bins entered, including Penticton Fire Rescue, The South Okanagan Brain Injury Society, Nature’s Fare Market, Penticton Kia, Greyback and SkyHawks.

There are two heats where someone sits in the bin and is raced one block along Main Street, touches the cone at Lakeshore and is raced back to the finish line.

Points went to Nature Fare’s bin who lost a wheel at the start but finished the race holding up one side.

In the finals, the Greyback Hammerheads were neck-and-neck against the Skyhawks, winning by a toe to achieve the coveted peach bin trophy.

The last time the peach bin races could be held was in 2019 where the Snowbirds took the title and trophy.

The race has since been renamed the Jennifer Casey Memorial Peach Bin Races to pay homage to Casey, a pilot with the Snowbirds who died in an air crash in May 2020 in Kamloops when a bird flew into the engine.

Casey competed in the Peach Bin races in 2019 with the Snowbirds who won that year.
