Sandcastle competition returning to Shaka Lake for Peach Festival

Sculptures will be judged on artistic content and intricacy

Get ready for a day of fun in the sand and sun next month when Penticton Peach Festival’s sandcastle competition returns to Skaha Lake.

A panel of judges will be on hand this Aug. 4 to determine which of the competitors’ sculptures stand above the rest starting at 5:30 p.m.

Points will be up for grabs based on the following:

• Best use of plot (five points)

• Artistic content (20 points)

• Intricacy (20 points)

• Discretionary (five points)

Now is the time for people of all ages to register in one of four team types: corporate/business, family and friends, youth team and kids’ team.

Registry fees will go to Penticton Rotary and vary based on team type.

“The kids’ category will get a 10 feet by 10 feet square plot and will be allowed to build for one hour, after which their sculpture will be judged and the winning prize awarded,” event organizers wrote.

Corporate and family teams, meanwhile, will get two hours to show off their creativity on the beach.

All materials in the final sculpture must be environmentally friendly and easily removable prior to final judging.

Registration on the day of at Skaha Lake begins at 4 p.m.

The winners of the 2019 competition created a music-themed sculptured and featured Nirvana and Bachman-Turner Overdrive band logos.

The event is part of the Peach Festival’s grand return to the community, which is promised to be “bigger and better than ever.”
