A Penticton-made movie starring famed Will and Grace actor Eric McCormack hits the big screen at Landmark Cinemas starting this Friday, Oct. 14.
‘Drinkwater’ will premiere Friday at 6:15 p.m. and be in theatres for one week at Penticton Landmark Cinemas. The coming-of-age movie is a multiple award-winning film starring McCormack, Daniel Doheny and Louriza Tronco.
Shot entirely in the Penticton area, the iconic landmarks to grace the screen are Penticton High School, the SOEC, SS Sicamous, and the beauty of Lake Okanagan, the Okanagan Valley, the KVR trail and vineyards.
The film has appearances from locals as extras and cameos including high school students, Penticton Vees players and coach Fred Harbinson as well local NHL players Duncan Keith and Scott Niedermayer.
The film was shot in 202o throughout Penticton and produced by Vees’ owner Graham Fraser and written by his son Luke Fraser and Ted McDonald.
“We look forward to the community finally getting to see the film that has won best film at eight film festivals across Canada,” said producer Graham Fraser and writer-son Luke Fraser.
Drinkwater is a coming-of-age story about awkward teen Mike Drinkwater who has trouble fitting in and is bullied by his antagonist and rival: wealthy school jock, Luke Ryan. While Mike’s offbeat father, Hank (Eric McCormack), spends more time defrauding the government than being the role model Mike deserves. Then a young woman moves to town, and their friendship gives them the courage to overcome their challenges.
“This may be one of the most apologetically Canadian films we’ve ever seen: there is a Zamboni, an extended Tim Hortons drive-thru scene, a subplot about a Wayne Gretzky rookie card, and the sounds of classic Canadian rockers from Doug and the Slugs to Loverboy. These ingredients mix well for a light-hearted coming-of-age story that is thoroughly enjoyable in a John Hughes sort of way,” writes the Whistler Film Festival.

Another full feature film has recently wrapped up filming in Penticton.
Wild Goat Surf is a full length movie being filmed exclusively in Penticton and will premier on Crave TV in November 2023.
