After facing not one but two of his former student-turned-professional-chefs, Chris Garvey has taken the title of Souperbowl Champion for 2018.
Chef Chris Garvey is the instructor of the Penticton Culinary Arts program at Penticton Secondary, and after facing former student Alexa Warner of Brodo Kitchen votes for the two contest soups was tied and went to a coin toss resulting in Garvey’s win in the first round.
The Souperbowl is a fun competition, held at the Soupateria and pitting local chefs against one-another, aimed at both raising the profile of the aid group and providing their clients with a few special hot meals as the summer fades to fall and the weather cools.
Round 2 of this year’s series of Souper Sundays saw Theo’s Restaurant’s head chef David Stern narrowly defeated by Donny Carlson of Bad Tattoo Brewing in the best soup of the day competition.
Over the three weeks of competition, local chefs prepared gourmet soups using mainly ingredients stocked at the Penticton Soupateria, aided by high school culinary arts students to feed the hungry.
The Soupateria feeds over a hundred people daily, and the diners not only enjoyed a nutritious meal, but voted for best soup as the people’s choice competition progressed. Weekly celebrity judges, who also served the meals of soup, sandwich, dessert and beverage included the Penticton Vees, MP Richard Cannings, as well as Penticton’s mayor and city councillors.
In the end, it was Chef Chris Garvey’s Cheeseburger Chowder that edged out Chef Donny Carlson’s Beef Noodle soup in the championship round.
Lanae Arcand, Conner Favall, Oliver Godbold and Ki Peterson, four students enrolled in Garvey’s Culinary Arts Program at Penticton Secondary, played an important competitive and educational role in the contest, as each paired with one of the participating chefs throughout the weeks of competition.
The Soupateria, on Orchard Avenue, is completely run by volunteers and serves a hot nutritious lunch to those in need every day of the year.
