Head down to the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department training grounds on May 15 to help the community be FireSmart.
The Kaleden FireSmart Board is hosting a free wood chipping event to encourage residents to clear their properties of brush and debris for fire season.
The event will be from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Dogwood Avenue training ground.
Bartlett Tree Experts will be providing the wood chipper, which will be used for small trees, branches and willows, and FortisBC is covering the chipping costs.
E-Z Bins will be providing bins for grasses, pine needles and cones, small shrubs and tumbleweeds.
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen encourages neighbours to work together to limb, trim, rake, thin and haul flammable debris to the chipper and bin for proper disposal, as changes to the areas closest to homes can have the largest impact on reducing the risk of wildfire danger.
“This chipping event is the result of local volunteers including the Kaleden FireSmart Board working together to keep the community safe,” said RDOS Area I director Subrina Monteith in a press release. “Being FireSmart is an ongoing process that goes well beyond just one day.”
Being FireSmart is a shared responsibility and everyone has a role to play in reducing the wildfire threat.
