Four years after it was first brought before city council, an Indigenous focused affordable housing project is underway in Penticton.
Construction recently began on the M'akola Housing Society's 28-unit project at 603 Main Street.
The project, according to the society's website, is aimed to be ready for occupancy by spring of 2026.
It will offer a mix of one, two and three-bedroom residential units.
The project had undergone revisions before getting final approval with a split vote from Penticton's 2022 city council.
The decision was split over whether to permit the building to be five storeys in height.
The society will operate and maintain the housing once it is completed, with BC Housing having provided funding for the construction.
When it was presented to city council, 20 per cent of the residential units were aimed to accommodate "deep affordability" for individuals who can only pay shelter rates; 50 per cent of units were proposed to have rent tied to income with 30 per cent of income going to rent.
That would leave the remaining 30 per cent of the units for low-end market rate for rent.
