Members of the public interested and invested in public safety are now being invited to apply for the City of Penticton's Public Safety Advisory Committee.

The committee will have 10 members, following approval for its establishment by city council on Jan. 14.

The city had previously had a crime and safety committee that was cut by council in 2023, along with the heritage committee.

The move to bring back the public safety committee was brought forward by Coun. Campbell Watt at the Dec. 17, 2024 council meeting.

The new committee will provide council with input on a variety of topics, including on policies and bylaws related to safety, public nuisance matters, graffiti and vandalism.

The city will be looking for 10 volunteers to sit on the committee, in particular looking for individuals with interest or experience in public safety and representation from a variety of groups, including local First Nations; business community; residents at large; families and youth; seniors; supportive services sector; mental health and addiction sector; academia and education sector; and corrections, restorative justice and law enforcement.

City staff had initially proposed nine members, with Coun. Watt requesting a slight adjustment to increase the number of committee members at large.

Information and how to apply can be found on the City of Penticton website. The application deadline is Jan. 31, 2025.

City council will appoint the volunteers to the committee after applications are submitted and reviewed.
