South Okanagan RCMP veterans honoured

The Medal of Bravery and King Charles Coronation Medal were recently bestowed to two locals

Two members of the South Okanagan RCMP Veterans Association recently were recognized for their service.

Ron Lyver, who lives in Summerland, was recently invested with the Medal of Bravery by the Governor General of Canada Mary Simon, and Finn Nielsen was presented with the King Charles Coronation Medal for his contributions to the community and region.

In 2011, then-Constable Lyver, along with two corporals, responded to an active shooter in Breton, Alberta. Lyver and one of the corporals ran to save a colleague who had been shot while the other corporal provided cover.

Lyver returned fire after the other corporal was shot, and the two were able to rescue the victim and retreat to safety.

Neilsen was recognized for making significant contributions to the region and community, for his years of support for the Veterans Association and through it the many charities it supports including Cops for Kids and the Canadian Cancer Society.
