PHOTOS: Cyclists hit the highways and streets for Okanagan Granfondo

Hundreds of cyclists are on the roads and highways of the South Okanagan today

Starting early Sunday morning, cyclists left in the hundreds from Penticton for the 12th annual Okanagan Granfondo.

The cycling event, which has been rated the best Granfondo in Canada, will see the cyclists climb up to Summerland before heading down to the rest of the South Okanagan.

Almost 2,000 riders were registered for this year's competition across the various different distances available, from the full 150 km Granfondo, to the 45 km Cortofondo.

The main route takes riders from Summerland down Highway 97 and then off White Lake Road, past the Dominion Radio Astropysical Observatory, down past Oliver, and then back up to Penticton.

Traffic control will be in place along the route, and travellers should keep an eye out for cyclists.

The day before, Saturday July 13, saw hundreds of kids take part in the Piccolofondo event on Lakeshore Drive.
