A single-vehicle collision in Rogers Pass between Revelstoke and Golden led to a frantic search by first responders on Sunday (May 28).

According to the Revelstoke RCMP, police received a call at 7:30 a.m. on May 28 with ‘limited information’ about a crash on Highway 1 east of Revelstoke.

Officers headed for the portion of the highway near Loop Brook Campground, where they conducted an extensive search of the roadway and ditches.

Police then located a Ford F150 which went off the road and was hidden from view with two passengers still inside.

Officers forced the door of the vehicle open and provided first aid to the two people in the vehicle. The driver, a 68-year-old man from Alberta, had to be extracted from the vehicle with help from the Revelstoke Fire Dept.

The man was transported to Kelowna General Hospital by helicopter with serious injuries. The passenger, a 69-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Queen Victoria Hospital before being released soon thereafter.

“The quick attendance and extensive search by the detachment members led to locating the vehicle and providing immediate assistance to the occupants,” said Sgt. Chris Dodds of the Revelstoke RCMP. “The cause of the collision is still under investigation but alcohol is not considered a factor.”

“Parks Canada staff provided invaluable assistance to Emergency Health Series and police by organizing a safe landing area for the EHS helicopter,” added Dodds.

A series of incidents

Sunday’s crash is the third on the portion of Highway 1 between Revelstoke and Golden in less than a week.

On Tuesday (May 23), a 44-year-old Golden resident was killed in Rogers Pass after colliding with a pickup truck.

According to the Golden RCMP, the two-vehicle collision happened at approximately 12:30 p.m. when his red Jeep Cherokee, travelling east, misread a right-hand bend in the road, crossing the centre line into oncoming traffic. The Jeep collided with an on-coming westbound pick-up truck.

Golden police and the BC Highway Patrol responded to the incident, and Highway 1 was subsequently closed for four hours. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Then, just two days later (May 25), an impaired driver collided with a transport truck near Canyon Hot Springs. Police responded to reports of a small white car driving erratically just before 4 p.m. when they were advised that the same car was involved in a collision with a commercial vehicle.

The driver of the car, a 49-year-old man, was determined to be impaired and subsequently detained for impaired driving causing bodily harm. The man was transported to the hospital in an ambulance and was later released from police custody.

Police are investigating the situation.
