As of noon Monday, Sept. 20, backyard fires and beach fire pits are allowed in the city of Penticton.

Outdoor fireplaces, such as those using propane, natural gas, briquettes or those equipped with a spark arrestor do not require an inspection or permit prior to use.

Wood burning fireplaces are required to be permanently installed and inspected by the Penticton Fire Department in order to receive an outdoor fireplace permit.

These fire places must adhere to the standards and restrictions, such as maximum allowable size, laid out in the city’s outdoor fireplaces webpage.

The beach pits will also now be open for the public to use as of noon.

The fire ban was put in place June 4.

It was just recently that the Penticton fire chief expanded the fire pit ban despite the BC Wildfire Service lifting the ban on campfires in the Okanagan on Sept. 9. The City of Penticton has stated campfires will remain banned until further notice.

“By order of the fire chief, the fire ban … will continue with no open burning within the City of Penticton boundaries,” read a release Sept. 10.

The fire season has slowed with cooler, wetter conditions. There are no fires of note in B.C.
