Bike lane work may cause traffic nightmare at busy Penticton intersection

The city of Penticton is advising drivers to avoid a major intersection for the next three weeks as they work on the lake-to-lake bike lane during the peak of tourism season.

Site work has started on the intersection of Martin Street and Eckhardt Avenue, said the city on Wednesday.

The signals have been dissembled and replaced with a three-way stop while site work is completed and new signals are installed.

“Drivers should expect delays and may want to avoid this intersection and take alternate routes while this work occurs over the next three weeks,” said the city in a statement.

Also on Wednesday, the 200 block to 300 block of Martin Street became one lane for drivers and the lines for the two-way cycle lane are now in.

It’s official. Martin Street is now one lane for vehicles and a bike lane on the east side. (Christian Howe/Facebook)

The city faced complaints from Martin Street residents most of last week after workers on the bike lane were grinding off paint from the asphalt during the late hours of the night.

The city changed the time of grinding to 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
