Blitz turns up fewer impaired in Penticton

Ten-hour roving checks result in a small percentage of impaireds.

During a one-day, 10-hour, roving weekend impaired driving blitz, RCMP initiated a half dozen investigations from the nearly 800 vehicles checked.

“I hate to use the word good, but it’s encouraging to see that people are getting the message about impaired driving and are having designated drivers and/or alternate means of transportation,” said Cpl Ted Manchulenko.

Penticton RCMP, along with the South Okanagan Traffic Services division, conducted the checks.

“It’s good for us to look at this and see these numbers are down, not withstanding the fact we’ll still continue to enforce throughout the holiday season on random check stops relating to impaired driving.”

In total, nine officers took part in the checks that were set up in 10 different locations Saturday and early Sunday morning.

In addition to the impaired driving investigations, the police were also able to recover a stolen vehicle which attempted to avoid one of the checks and was found crashed afterwards.
