Penticton city council is holding a special meeting with the Downtown Penticton Business Improvement Association (DPA) on March 24 in council chambers.

The DPA had written the city on March 17 requesting a special meeting to discuss their levy renewal request that they brought forward to council at the last meeting.

The special meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on March 24 and chaired by acting mayor Frank Regehr, as mayor John Vassilaki has declared a conflict of interest and will not participate.

Council unanimously voted on March 15 to have the DPA go out and complete a petition for service, which requires the support of at least 50 per cent of property owners and 50 per cent of assessed property value to keep the BIA active.

The DPA then issued an urgent notice to its members on Friday, March 18 to claim that the organization is on the edge of being shut down.

The decision by council to require the DPA to go out and get approval from property owners could prove to difficult and would unlikely succeed, said the DPA.

“This process comes with an overwhelming amount of work to be completed by April 30 and is a direct obstructionist move to normal operations of the association and is essentially an affront to the businesses within the BIA to take away any representation we provided on your behalf to the city,” reads part of the notice.
