Complaint filed against RCMP officer

Penticton man sustains a broken leg during confrontation with police on New Year's Eve

A Penticton man has lodged a complaint against an RCMP officer after suffering a broken leg at the time of his arrest.

Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, senior media relations officer, said an independent investigation is being conducted by the Nelson Police Department into the arrest of the man on New Year's Eve in Penticton.

On Dec. 31 at about 11:30 p.m. RCMP said a man allegedly stumbled onto the street in front of a police vehicle. Vermeulen said the police officer stopped to talk to the man, who appeared intoxicated.

"A struggle with police ensued and the man suffered an injury to his leg. He was taken to hospital where it was determined that his leg was broken," said Vermeulen in a release.

As per RCMP policy, the matter is being investigated independently and it was expected that Nelson police would start that process on Tuesday.
