Construction of Summerland high school gym expected to begin in late fall

SD67 has also given the go ahead to start upgrades to Penticton’s Shatford Centre

Construction of the new Summerland Secondary gymnasium is tentatively set for late fall 2022, said School District 67 board of education in an update on the Long-Range Facilities Planning process.

As well in the planning process, the board has identified two properties that it owns but doesn’t need for educational use; – 1604 West Bench Drive, and 130 Linden Avenue in Kaleden. 1604 West Bench Drive is vacant land and 130 Linden Ave. Kaleden is a house and property.

Public consultation on the potential disposal of the properties will begin in the coming months, said James Palanio, board chair.

The board has also authorized staff to proceed with upgrades to the Shatford building, starting with the main floor life safety systems. The Shatford Centre is owned by SD 67 and was leased by the Okanagan School of Arts from 2005 until 2020 when the school district evicted them. The centre is located beside Pen High and is a heritage building, built in 1921.

“As the board continues its work with the Long-Range Facilities plan, we have identified a number of items to move forward on that will ultimately become part of our 10-year Long Range Facilities Plan,” said chair Palanio. “The board wishes to acknowledge that a new board will be in place in November, and it will need to continue this work to ensure that all decisions are focused on making the best uses of our resources in the support of student learning.”

There will be no changes to any schools for the 2022/23 school year. Trustees will communicate future public engagement opportunities through the school district website and Facebook page.
