Dangerous Penticton intersection sees 3 crashes in less than 2 days

Traffic is currently snarled going north on Highway 97 Tuesday morning

Another crash has snarled traffic at the dangerous intersection of Highway 97 and 3A near Penticton.

The crash took place on Highway 97 around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Northbound traffic at the weigh scales was blocked for sometime after the crash.

On Monday, the same junction saw two crashes.

A crash that led to a car fire took place at the intersection of Highways 97 and 3A in Kaleden.

The incident occurred shortly before 11:50 a.m.

One vehicle went off the road next to the eastbound turnoff of Highway 3.

It is not currently known whether any of those involved were injured. A fire truck was on scene with hoses laid out on the road indicating there may have been a car fire.

Then around 3:20 p.m., a vehicle trying to make a left at the upper turnoff struck an upcoming vehicle. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch.

The woman making a left took to Facebook to say she was OK. A stalled semi parked on the side of Highway 97 was blocking full view of traffic coming south, making it difficult for people making a left.

The three crashes have many calling for traffic lights at the intersection that has seen multiple crashes in the past few months.

A petition to take immediate action to improve traffic safety on Highway 97 in Kaleden garnered nearly 500 signatures in six hours and now has over 3,800 signatures.

Kaleden-Twin Lakes area director for the Regional District Okanagan Similkameen, Sabrina Monteith has been pushing for change at the intersection.

She said the Ministry of Transportation has started evaluating and gathering data. She expects the petition will be presented through MLA Roly Russell, MLA for Boundary-Similkameen to MOTI staff.
