Time is running out for those interested in seeking a spot on Summerland’s council or the school board.
The nomination deadline comes to an end on Friday, Sept. 14 and so far, only a few candidates have formally declared themselves.
Linda Tynan, chief administrative officer for Summerland, said some have picked up nomination packages.
The election will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, when Summerlanders will vote for a mayor, six councillors and two school board trustees.
If there are not enough nominations in place for any of these roles, additional time may be granted.
“We can extend the nomination period for a little while,” Tynan said.
If there are as many candidates as positions, then all will be in by acclamation.
In past years, Summerland has had some years with many candidates on the ballot and others with only a few candidates.
For example, in the 1996 election, there were two mayoral candidates and seven candidates for the six council positions.
Three years later, in the 1999 municipal election, there were three mayoral candidates and 19 councillor candidates.
That year, the two school board trustees were in by acclamation.
During the last municipal election in 2014, Summerland had five candidates for mayor and 16 for the six councillor positions.
Once again, there was no election for school trustees as the two Summerland trustees were in by acclamation.
