The man facing charges for allegedly assaulting a senior in the parking lot of the Cherry Lane Shopping Centre prior to a standoff with police was sent for a psychiatric evaluation last week.

Danny Douglas Ross, 31, is facing charges of assault, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and wilfully resisting or obstructing a police officer related to an incident on Jan. 3.

RCMP reportedly received a 911 call from a witness who said Ross had punched a 78-year-old man in the back of the head before separating a pair of scissors which he allegedly used to threaten people in the parking lot and police.

Ross appeared in Penticton court via video from the Kamloops Regional Correctional Centre on Jan. 8. Crown counsel Vernon Frolick read from prior psychiatric assessments of Ross, noting that he has substance abuse issues.

A 30-day psychiatric assessment at the Port Coquitlam Forensic hospital was ordered for Ross, who was lying down on the bench for much of the hearing and threatened “If I hurt anyone else it’s on your [expletive] heads.”
