The municipality of Summerland is seeking input on a waterfront concept plan for the community.

The plan is aligned with Summerland council’s strategic priority on active lifestyles, which focuses on ensuring community design and services that enhance inclusive, barrier-free, participation and promotion of physical activity and healthy lifestyles, and based on recommendations from the 2018 Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The new plan is based on recommendations from the 2018 Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

The waterfront concept plan will cover parkland, beaches, amenities, swimming and water activities and infrastructure from the Peach Orchard Beach boat launch to the south end of Rotary Beach, as well as the area commonly known as Horse Beach, at 16997 Lakeshore Dr.

An online public survey is open until March 23 as the first opportunity for input into this plan. Responses will help municipal staff and council understand community values, activities, and future management and opportunities of these valuable waterfront public parks. In addition, the project consultants are hosting stakeholder workshops with local organizations and youth in March.

Once the initial feedback has been collected and research has been compiled, draft concept plans and recommendations will be developed for further public input. A second survey plus a public open house will be hosted later in the spring.

In recent years, the community has worked to improve its waterfront area. In 2021, repair work was completed on a lakefront pathway that had sustained significant damages during the spring floods of 2017 and 2018.
