Heat wave closing Penticton Community Market early

The Saturday Market closes down at noon to avoid the hottest part of the day

The Downtown Community Market will close 1.5 hours early, at noon, on Saturday, July 30, to avoid the hottest part of the day. The time change will help reduce the risk of heat stress to visitors, vendors, and market staff since Saturday temperatures are expected to be in the high 30s.

The market will continue to open at the regular start time of 8:30 a.m.

The decision to close the market earlier than usual was made in order to follow Work Safe BC and BC Centre For Disease Control recommendations during heat events. The decision follows similar markets limiting their hours of operation as well.

Visitors to the Downtown Community Market are encouraged to bring extra water, load up on sunscreen, and wear cool clothing to make the market experience as safe and comfortable as possible.

With the expected high temperatures of 38 C, the Downtown Penticton BIA is encouraging visitors to leave their animals at home this week. The pavement will be too hot for dogs to walk on without foot protection.

The Community Market operates in the 200 block of Main Street, Front Street and Backstreet Blvd.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning for South Okanagan with temperatures as high as 39 C until Monday when it cools down a bit to 30 C with a 50 per cent change of rain.

The Downtown Penticton BIA is hosting BC Day activities and live music at Gyro Park on the holiday Monday.
