A 43-year-old man is due back in court in Penticton next week after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase in a vehicle containing stolen guns.

Daniel Wayne Miller is charged with possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and breach of a court order.

Miller was arrested around 10 a.m. on Jan. 23 in the parking lot of the Spirit Ridge Resort in Osoyoos at the conclusion of a chase that began at the Highway 3 lookout just outside of town, according to an RCMP press release.

Mounties allege Miller stole the vehicle earlier that day in Grand Forks, then used it to speed away from a residential break-and-enter he committed in Midway, where he made off with jewelry and firearms before heading to Osoyoos.

“Police engaged in a pursuit with the suspect on Highway 3, however due to the suspect’s dangerous driving were forced to disengage as the suspect approached town,” Cpl Jayson Bayda said in a press release.

“In efforts to flee, the suspect reached excessive speeds and passed vehicles over double solid lines.”

The chase came to a close when Miller allegedly turned onto 45th Street, which is a dead end.

Miller, who police said is from Cranbrook, is in custody and set for a bail hearing Feb. 4 in provincial court in Penticton.

He has a lengthy criminal record and is due in court in Cranbrook on Feb. 10 for two other weapons offences.
