Multiple impaired drivers were taken off the streets of Kelowna last week as the RCMP conducted check stops on National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day.
On Saturday, May 20, the RCMP set up two check stops to bring awareness to the impacts and realities of impaired driving. The stops were set up at the intersection of Lakeshore Road and Old Meadows Road and Shepherd Road in Rutland.
Police stopped more than 100 vehicles. Five of the stops resulted in roadside suspensions due to drug impairment. Two 90-day immediate roadside prohibitions (IRPs) were given out, which also includes a 30-day impoundment for their vehicles.
The RCMP also seized a significant amount of illegal drugs and cash believed to be associated with the street-level drug trade in the community.
“More times than not, impaired driving results in catastrophic injuries or death, and can carry lifelong effects on innocent people and their families. These results are completely avoidable” said Non-commissioned municipal traffic services officer Sgt. Mark Booth. “Furthermore, if you plan on drinking and or consuming drugs, please call a friend or a cab and get home safe. You can expect to see our officers performing check stops and targeted enforcement throughout the summer.”
On top of illegal drugs and alcohol, many people don’t realize that they’re not supposed to operate vehicles when taking legal, prescription drugs because of their side effects like drowsiness.
The Kelowna RCMP reminds the public that everyone plays a role in impaired driving. Report all impaired driving incidents by calling 911.
