Keremeos’ Volunteer Fire Department turned a fire at a Cawston outbuilding into a learning experience for new recruits on Feb. 15.
The property owner had been able to knock down most of the flames on the outside of the accessory building, making it harder for the fire department to find the fire at the back of the property.
“There wasn’t a lot of open flames, and it wasn’t easy to find,” said fire chief Jordy Bosscha. “Crews couldn’t see the fire when they were driving by.”
After tracking down the fire, the team doused the remaining flames, before chasing hotspots in the roof and walls.

Two engines, a rescue truck and a personnel transport, carrying a total of 17 firefighters, responded to the fire.
“We have a lot of new members, so we sent everybody to give them a little experience,” said Bosscha.
The fire, which had stayed mostly outside the building, caused damage to the wall and heat damage inside.
The department received the call at 6:58 p.m. Monday (Feb. 15) and were on scene for an hour and a half.
There were no injuries reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
