A pot store in Keremeos is one step closer to opening.

Marg Coulson, CAO for the village, said the province is asking the village for comment on a proposal that would see a retail cannabis store setup at the former Berg’s Ox Yoke Collectibles store on Highway 3, near the liquor store.

“It’s very recent. It came in late before the weekend so we’re just starting to look at it,” she said.

The Provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch application was submitted on behalf of Quantum 1 Cannabis Corp. to open a non-medicinal cannabis retail store. The application lists that the store would be open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The property is currently zoned as C1 Commercial Zone.

Comments on the proposal are being received from the public and can be emailed to coordinator@keremeos.ca, by fax 250-499-5477 or by dropping them off at the village office.

All correspondence must include name and Keremeos municipal address. Comments from outside of the village cannot be considered by council.

Coulson said comments would be forwarded to the province and if successful in their application Quantum 1 would then need to apply to the village for a business licence.

The Review spoke to the owner of Quantum 1 earlier this year. The company has at least seven applications into the province to open stores in communities including North Vancouver, Grand Forks, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Creston and Terrace.

Russ Rossi said the plan is to open more than 200 stores in Canada and around the world. He noted a store would have anywhere between 12 and 22 employees.
