City of Vernon staff have cleared the debris from Eastside Road and hydro crews are now working to restore electrical power to the area.

According to a release from the City, one-way alternating traffic commenced at 4 p.m. today and drivers are urged to use either Eastside Road or Kokanee Road (depending on how the clean-up progresses).

The goal is to restore electricity to area homes by 7 p.m. this evening.

A preliminary onsite inspection by a geotechnical engineer indicates that the banks are stable. The landslide was reportedly caused by natural drainage of surface and ground water.

A landslide temporarily closed a road in Okanagan Landing.

The landslide was reported Tuesday morning in the 9100 block of Eastside Road.

“Personnel are on-scene assessing the situation. People are being asked to stay clear of the area, including the road,” said the City of Vernon in a news release, prior to the road re-opening to alternating traffic at 4 p.m.

There are no injuries due to the nine metres-wide landslide of mud, which occurred just after 1 a.m. Tuesday. One property was damaged and hydro was been lost to an approximate 300 residences in the area.

“A preliminary onsite inspection by a geotechnical engineer indicates that the banks are stable,” the city states. “The landslide was likely caused by natural drainage of surface and ground water.”

Crews had also hoped to restore power by 7 p.m.

In the event of future incidents, an emergency evacuation route is available for residents south of the landslide. The route runs between Kokanee Road and Eastside Road.
