Starting this week, each Friday until April 12 is the ninth annual Lent Lunch Soup fundraiser for Discovery House.

The lunch actually began as a way to say thank you to the Catholic church by Discovery for the rental of their first recovery house for just a dollar a year.

“So we kind of wanted to do something with the guys in the house being involved and we thought a good way is to do vegetarian soups the six weeks before Easter,” said Jerome Abraham, Discovery’s executive director.

Many of the Catholic religion mark this time of year with abstention from eating meat.

According to Abraham having the clients of the facility not only make but serve their creations to guests at St. John Vianney Hall on Wade Street, helps breakdown the stigma associated with addiction by bringing people together.

“I think when people think of addiction they think of people using in doorways and people on the street because of their addiction but this shows that addiction touches all manner of people,” he said.

Each week there will be anywhere from 10-12 different kinds of vegetarian soups and for $5 ($2 for refills) customers will also get fresh Cobs buns and Starbucks coffee or tea.
