A bylaw to increase the maximum floor space for secondary suites in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen is now waiting on ministry approval.
The RDOS board gave their third reading on July 8 to the bylaw, which would increase the maximum area to 125 square metres from the current 90 for secondary suites and accessory dwelling units.
The bylaw affects most rural areas throughout the regional district.

In the fall of 2020, the board’s planning and development committee resolved that the maximum floor area be expanded. The first and second readings of the bylaw were passed in early June.
In a report to the board, Chris Garrish, planning manager for the regional district said the increase allows for a third bedroom to be added to a suite. A master bedroom and bath requires around 20 square metres of floor area. This provides additional space for those living in a suite.
Approval from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is required before the bylaw is adopted as the proposed amendments involve lands within 800 metres of a controlled access highway.
