Surveillance cameras will soon be installed in Naramata.
At the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen meeting on June 2, the board approved the installation of two video surveillance cameras on the washrooms at the park in an effort to prevent theft and vandalism. Up to three video surveillance cameras will also be installed at 1655 Reservoir Rd., adjacent to the Campbell Mountain Landfill.

The regional district has a video surveillance policy in place to ensure the camera use complies with legislative requirements. The policy allows for video surveillance systems on the regional district’s buildings or properties.
Before installing the cameras, regional district staff must report to the board and must demonstrate how the cameras will meet the criteria of the policy.
In a report to the regional district board, Christy Malden, manager of legislative services for the regional district, said there has been a steady increase in theft, vandalism and property damage at the washrooms at Manitou Park, requiring thousands of dollars in repair work.
The facility on Reservoir Road has also been subjected to increasing vandalism and attempted break-ins.
In addition to the surveillance cameras, regional district staff have taken other measures including installing sensor lights and placing signs to deter vandals. However, these measures have not been effective.
“Using video surveillance at these and other RDOS facilities should help to act as a deterrent and reduce the number of incidents, resulting in a decrease in costs to repair or clean up the damage and replace stolen items,” Malden said in her report to the regional district board.
