The third phase of Penticton’s Lake-to-Lake bike lane is set to get underway soon.

The contract for the construction, worth $4.1 million, has been awarded to Grizzly Excavating, who built the previous phase of the project.

As part of the 2022 budget, $4.7 million was earmarked to be funded from the city’s electrical reserve. At the time, a minority of members of the city council had tried to postpone the project until grant funding could be secured.

The third route will travel from Fairview Road along Duncan Avenue, before turning back south to travel along Atkinson Street until Kinney Avenue.

Construction is set to begin soon and completed in the fall of 2022. Work on the project will begin on the Atkinson Street to Kinney Avenue section, with work on the intersection at Atkinson and Industrial targeted for August.

“Not only will this project be a significant milestone for our cycling network, but it will improve pedestrian safety in the area by addressing sidewalk gaps, creating safe crossing opportunities, and reducing vehicle speeds. The project will also improve safety for all users through an upgraded intersection at Duncan and Atkinson, and overall corridor lighting improvements,” said Kristen Dixon, the city’s general manager of infrastructure.

During the construction, residents living and travelling along Duncan Avenue and Atkinson Street can expect to see signs of construction, including traffic changes and periodic single-lane traffic as well as possible full closures or detours.

A list of the changes along the route, detailed design drawings and information about road closures and detours can be viewed at www.penticton.ca/lake-to-lake.
