A novice driver travelling over the speed limit caught the attention of Salmon Arm RCMP.

On Nov. 16, officers witnessed a vehicle travelling what they estimated to be 100 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. A radar reading confirmed it was moving at 104 km/h, explained Const. Andrew Hodges in a media release.

The vehicle was stopped and the driver was found to have a class 7 N (novice) licence. However, that N was not displayed on the vehicle. The driver was served violation tickets for excessive speed ($253), failing to display their N ($109), and his vehicle was impounded for a mandatory seven days. The matter was referred to ICBC.

Unlicensed

At 11 a.m. on Nov. 22, officers saw a grey pickup truck with no front licence plate. They were able to query the rear plate, which turned out to be inactive. Police then conducted a traffic stop and discovered the pickup’s driver already had licence actions to serve a driving prohibition and vehicle impound, said Hodges.

The driver was handed violation tickets for no insurance ($598), no driver’s licence ($276), and for having the wrong numbered plate ($109). The vehicle was impounded for the mandatory seven days and the matter was referred to ICBC.

Impaired

At 6 a.m. on Nov. 26, police saw a vehicle with a burnt-out headlight and a plate not connected to a registered vehicle. Police stopped the vehicle and could smell alcohol from the cab, said Hodges. A roadside screening device was used and displayed a “WARN” result. Hodges said the driver was given the opportunity to provide a second sample, and again blew a WARN.

“Due to previous impaired driving, the driver was prohibited from driving for seven days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days,” said Hodges, adding the driver was also found to be driving while already prohibited, and was issued a future court date to speak to the matter.

At midnight on Nov. 26, police stopped another vehicle, suspecting the driver to be impaired.

“The driver stated they hadn’t had an alcoholic beverage for ‘two days’,” said Hodges. A roadside screening device was used twice, both times resulting in WARN. The driver was issued a three-day driving prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded for three days. The matter was referred to ICBC.
