A couple floating down the Okanagan River Channel on the weekend got stuck in currents around a strainer below the Green Mountain Road bridge.

Penticton Fire Chief Wayne Williams is reminding those floating down the channel to stay safe this summer after fire crews responded to two people stuck on the channel on Saturday.

A man and a woman were floating down the channel on tubes when they encountered fast currents and were stuck on the strainer below the bridge on the corner of Green Mountain Road and Fairview Road.

Williams is asking those floating down the Channel this summer to keep an eye out for each other and stay safe.

“One of the big things do not tie your floating devices together because what happens is when you come to a bridge, one floaty may go one way and one floaty may go the other way and you’ll be stuck there, because of the pressure of the water.”

While it’s not required, Williams said a life preserver vest would be recommended for non-swimmers or young swimmers.
